Roof Maintenance

roof maintenance in sussexThe Benefits of Regular Roof Maintenance Inspections

There's no doubt about it, roofs work quietly, but they work hard, protecting your home and its contents.

A roof isn’t a thing that we look at on a regular basis and to many people, it’s hardly a thing of beauty (although we do beg to differ - but then roofing is what we do!).

Roofs tend to get forgotten about because unfortunately, property owners don’t actually view a new roof in the way that they can enjoy it like a new bathroom or kitchen, and - let's face it - a new roof isn't something you actually invite your friends around to admire either.  If you're at all concerned about your roof...

The benefits of good roof maintenance are nevertheless obvious.  This means that regular roofing maintenance inspection is usually a very good idea before you notice water dripping on your head (or in one case, in the wife’s bedroom slippers!).

It pays to love your roof!

Roofs suffer from wear and tear, extremes of sunlight and rain, and deserve an inspection now and again.  Your hardworking roof goes through many extremes of weather, rain and sunlight.  Small cracks, lost tiles, holes can quickly become big problems unless you keep a weather eye on the situation.  Maintaining your roof regularly will give you peace of mind and prevent a crisis occurring come bad times.

Having your gutters cleaned regularly and not allowing a build up of moss and grasses in your gutters gives you a good opportunity to find out what's going on 'above'.  While your gutters are being cleaned, an experienced roofer will be able to assess any other jobs that need doing.  For example, especially in Eastbourne where seagulls are a constant problem, the buildup of bird mess is a nuisance and creates a great deal of vegetation growing in the gutters.  Moss tends to build up and block your downpipes causing flooding and this could be reduced by having fire gel or bird spikes installed around your chimneys, guttering or roof top.

How often should I have my roof inspected?

You should have a roof inspection preferably twice a year ideally just before severe winter months and then again afterwards. This will identify anything that needs to be done.  Quick repairs to small issues when you discover them can save you many hours and a great deal of money.  If you don't know what to look for, then ask an expert, and get a few quotes and different opinions, then make your choice.

The first sign of trouble is often a leak noticed underneath your roof apart from visible holes or loose tiles.  Unfortunately, if you ignore roof problems for too long the problems don't clear up by themselves.  Ignoring a small crack means you will eventually have water pouring in causing long term damp and rot to the roofing timber, weakening your roof and whatever's below it to cause much more expensive damage than the original broken tile, cracked flat roof or whatever.
